From the Tribune Star - "The Wabash Valley is a team and the United Way is a team, trying to raise money for a greater cause.” Trent Miles, ISU football coach

The United Way of the Wabash Valley is off to a fast and encouraging start as it presses toward a 2011 fundraising goal of $1.85 million. Last week, the organization announced the stunning results of its recent pilot campaign — $926,101. That puts it at the halfway mark and provides strong momentum for an autumn push.

Although economic conditions everywhere make fundraising difficult for any cause, there are reasons for the local United Way to be optimistic. Last year, during similar hard times, it surpassed its $1.8 million goal for the first time in 10 years by raising almost $1.9 million. It was an impressive result that speaks volumes about the community and the faith it has in the United Way of the Wabash Valley and the service agencies it funds.

From the Tribune-Star (8/30/11) - SULLIVAN — Four-year old Adyn Harman jumped from one colored square to the next, each time with a big smile on his face as he hopscotched on a Success By 6 Born Learning Trail at the Sullivan City Park.

“I like the shapes and colors,” his mother, Darla Harman said as his son participated along the trail with other children from Smidgens Child Care in Dugger.

Sullivan city and park officials, along with representatives of the United Way of the Wabash Valley, dedicated the new trail Monday.

Troy Fears, executive director of the United Way of the Wabash Valley, said Sullivan is the third Born Learning Trail supported by the United Way. The first trail was established at Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute in 2009, with the second at Forest Park in Brazil last year.

“We would like to put in a trail in each county that we serve,” Fears said, with trails still to be established in Parke and Vermillion counties, plus Clark County in Illinois.
