From the Tribune Star - TERRE HAUTE — For a third year in a row, the United Way of the Wabash Valley surpassed its annual fundraising goal, collecting more than $1.9 million, topping its goal of $1.86 million, organization officials announced Monday night.

At its annual meeting and dinner at Hulman Center, the United Way used a line of children holding large cards to display the final amount raised. By accident or design, the child holding the "9" in $1.9 million had the card upside down, giving a momentary impression that the goal had not been reached.

Thanks to the generosity of our local community, United Way of the Wabash Valley (UWWV) has exceeded its campaign goal by raising $1,920,053, topping the amount raised last year by 3.4 percent, or $65,446, and this year's goal by $60,053. This marks the 3rd consecutive year the organization has exceeded its campaign goal.

"To surpass our goal during these challenging times is nothing short of extraordinary," said 2012 Campaign Chair Claudia Tanoos, Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation." As these difficult times continue, more and more people need the safety net of programs and services supported by our United Way. We shared this message with the community throughout the campaign and people responded with extraordinary goodwill."
